Mechanic Tip: Oil Change Myth to Pre Fill Oil Filter

Pre filling the oil filter is not necessary for modern vehicles, and many manufacturers are warning against it due to the potential contamination you’re introducing into your engine thru the unfiltered oil.

Unless your factory service manual recormmends pre-filling the filter, DON’T DO IT.

If you don’t believe me, think about all the top-down facing filters and side mount filters that are impossible to pre-fill with oil. Those cars aren’t exploding after oil changes.

  1. New oil is unfiltered wow that’s a new insight. I didn’t foresee coming. New oil is unfiltered food for thought.

  2. Alright; well since you’re making the claim, please share which auto mfrs are “starting to recommend against it.” (Your words). Or just cite one mfr’s reference material. I’ll claim (with no citations) that misinforming ppl, or giving bad advice with zero effort to validate it is atrocious. Also I call bullshit but WITH citation: check what a lubrication specialist would recommend, certified by the STLE (Society of Tribologists & Lubrication Engineers). Cuz this HAS been tested. (That new oil is cleaner from the bottle than any that’s been filtered after circulating the engine/pre-filling to reduce micro-wear on a dry start, causes no damage)…
